Brief Summary:
-The way our organization works- Each horses posted with a the status of "Direct Ship" or with a "Deadline" are horses that were bought and owned by a kill buyer. Before we came along they would go directly to Mexico. We now that the opportunity to go through each load before they are shipped and we take as many as possible but of course we have to choose the ones that we are most likely to find home for.
-Please note that some horses are considered performance horses, these are higher end horses and with them we are given more time to find them homes, although if we are unable to do so that are still at risk of ending up back in the slaughter pipeline.
The Difference:
Unlike other kill pens theses horses are taken care of at our facility and kept a close eye on. We also inform all buyers of any issues we see while they’re in our care and if their horse shows any signs or sickness they are informed and move to a separate location. We have a total of 180 acres in three separate locations with 9 separate pastures in Arkansas as well as 350 acres in several different locations in Virginia. This helps us keep theses horses happy and healthy while we have them. Also unlike some other kill pens the kill buyer doesn’t make any more money off of these horses than he would to ship them direct, we pay the going rate they would bring at the boarder. But unlike a normal rescue we have a set time frame to get these horses into homes and if we aren’t able to do so they’re taken back from us, only because we don’t have the funds to pay for them and keep them. Also unlike many others the kill buyer we network for does have the license to ship direct to Mexico and Canada we are not going through a third party or using this as a tactic to sell horses or pull at owners heart strings.
(We are also strict advocates of never being misleading, due to our own experience of working with other “kill pens” if a horse has a ship date, that horse will be taken to slaughter on that date. If any changes are made or if that horse is going to be taken to auction as opposed to slaughter the page will be notified.)
Who We Are:
Please keep in mind that we are horse loving women trying our best to find these horses homes! Collectively we have worked in all aspects of this field. From adopting our own to selling and marketing for both some of the biggest rescues and kill pens in the US. We believe have have used our experiences and taken advantage of our opportunities to create an organization that is most importantly helping horses who are actually in immediate danger but also proving proper care to them while we have them in our possession and providing as much information possible to new owners so they find themselves in a home where they do not have to worry about ending back up in their current situation. We take each horses well being very personally. We love our community and all of those who help us reach our goal. Negative feedback is hurtful mostly to the horses but do us as well and we encourage everyone to read this “About Us” section before making judgments. If you have concerns or questions please contact one of us we love giving more background and information about what we do and why we do it!
A rescue/direct ship horse is a horse we have hand picked out of a group of slaughter bound horses to share with our community. We know we cannot save every horse so we do our best to choose horses with great potential and talent. Direct Ships are not ideal to our organization, but if we only have a few days to network these horses it is still worth trying! These horses generally have a shorter time frame to be rescued and are in immediate need of a home.
A performance horse is a higher end horse we have the opportunity to offer to the public. We are generally given an extended time period to home these horses; therefore they are at lower ricks of shipping but please keep in mind they will be taken back from us if we are unable to re home them. As stated above we do not like to be deceitful and that is why if we are not given a ship date for a horse is it not stated that they are at risk, but with that being said while it is uncommon we cannot control the decisions the kill buyer makes and where he sends these horses when we fail to find them homes and we have sadly seen outstanding horses go to slaughter but most generally these horses are returned to auction which often leads to them falling back in the pipeline.
Our horses will always have a ship date clearly posted as soon as we’re informed of the date they are to be shipped. We have little to no control over this variable. We offer payment plans and boarding to help assist these horses into their new loving homes.
Why would someone slaughter a good horse you may wonder. There are many reasons these horses have ended up in the market horse pipeline. Some examples would be their owners experiencing health issues, they were mistakingly bred and/or never received proper training. Other examples would be someone purchased a horse without thinking of the commitment/responsibility or the owner is looking for "fast cash". The reasons they’re in this situation is far from in between but you may also wonder why people are buying them to slaughter instead of giving them a new home and that answer is simple. Buying and selling livestock of any kind is a business to many and many people in the United States make a living doing so, thus the re-homing fee. While we don’t have the power to stop the slaughter of horses for meat we can save a few of these amazing animals that have wrongfully found themselves headed on a one way trip.
While we like to be selective to give these horses the best chance at finding a good home there are always more where they came from! If you or a local rescue have the means to home more than we’re offering please don’t hesitate to contact us! We have access to thousands of horses each month. We can fill orders and want to work with you to save as many as we can.
